The left side of your brain also has one (other side, hidden here). Please note, the wrinkly cortex “gray matter” and glial cells “white matter” of the brain is not shown. These other structures are other parts of the brain’s “limbic system” (the “mammal brain”). In the 1970’s, independent brain researcher and behaviorist T.D.A. Lingo introduced the idea that deliberate and conscious control of the amygdala and it’s accompanying positive or negative responses in the brain was possible. His behavior modification facility, which he affectionately named The Dormant Brain Research and Development Laboratory (in existence, 1957-1993), tested this hypothesis over several decades. Lingo methodically observed via longitudinal studies that such a thing was indeed possible. His methods included visualization and meditation along with a variety of other behavior modification techniques. The veracity of such methods to directly affect the amygdala and resultant brain functions was corroborated by later research, such as that carried on by Sara W. Lazar and Herbert Benson . (Sara W. Lazar, “Stress reduction correlates with structural changes in the amygdala”, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2840837/ Sara W. Lazar, G, Gollub Bush, G.L. Fricchione, G. Khalsa G, Herbert Benson, “Functional brain mapping of the relaxation response and meditation”, NeuroReport, 11: 1581-1585, (2000).) “Clicking” the amygdala, is the “slang” phrase first coined by Lingo that refers to either automatic (reactive non-deliberate) or conscious deliberate activation of amygdaloid body processes (by cortex influence). These days, this is a preferred IMAGE and phrase… “TICKLE YOUR AMYGDALA” Why “tickle” instead of “click”? “Tickle” is a generally positive image and thought, whereas “click” is more neutral and may indicate a click backwards into negativity as well as a forward positive click. Research with thousands of people over the past several decades shows that “Tickle Your Amygdala” is preferred. But, just use what works best for you. When the amygdala’s connections to the R-complex (or “reptile brain”, Dr. Paul McLean) are activated, fight or flight and basic reactionary survival processes occur in brain/body. The slang for this is “clicking backward”. It is primary and basic, and automatic. When cortex and frontal lobes processes overcome the limitations of the reactive reptile brain, the slang is “clicking the amygdala forward”. The brain rewards certain enhanced survival behaviors with pleasure, and this patterning of learned positive behavior involves the amygdala and its connections to the forward pre-frontal cortex. This can be done consciously and deliberately. The brain’s advanced electrochemical circuits can be and are controlled with THOUGHT. This is beyond any conjecture, and just a plain simple fact. To click your amygdala forward – to cause changes in amygdala function and in brain process- you don’t need any machines, gadgets, pills, or signing up for expensive retreats or courses. How to TICKLE your amygdala forward and eventually !POP! your frontal lobes? Just start by reading through this site. 1) First, read at The Library . There is LOTS of free and useful information at these places and elsewhere throughout the entire Amazing Brain website. 2) Brain Book Commercial: When you are ready, The Frontal Lobes Supercharge is a portable, non-electric BOOK -very convenient, works anywhere. It will further CLARIFY all aspects of clicking into your frontal lobes. The book systematically removes- one by one- all the obstacles that society puts in your way. It will quickly remove all the unconscious habits that keep you clicked backward. Commercial over. Tickle your amygdala forward is like wiggling your finger. Only it happens inside your brain instead of on the end of your arm. Do this: wiggle your right index finger…..easy, isn’t it? Okay, wiggle your left big toe….easy too? Now, locate your amygdala (see chart above)….you click it forward using your frontal lobes- IMAGE that your amygdala is like a click toggle switch- Now click the switch forward towards your forehead. There! You did it. * * * 3D Brain Fly Through— OPEN WITH QUICKTIME PLAYER- you can control with Quicktime Play Arrow and move to any part. About 40% into it, you will see the LIMBIC SYSTEM— and the AMYGDALA is shown as two golden nuggets in the SECOND inside layer below the cortex– they look like two little upturned boxing gloves perhaps Download here: Brain FLY-BY Windows Media 1.9 MB Brain FLY-BY Quicktime QuickTime video 1.7 MB You may simply click on the link above, or RIGHT click and chose “Save Target” * * * Not sure you’re doing it right? Read everything at the rest of this site for clues and you won’t have any problem. You will learn how to click your amygdala forward and turn on genius levels of creativity, intelligence, pleasure, and even ESP in 1/10 the amount of time that students took to learn back in the early days of our brain research. After 40 total years of research and practical teaching to folks like you- we now know the shortcuts and what works best. Note the very obvious olfactory bulbs (looks like squid tentacles) reaching back into the posterior amygdaloid area. These make for an easy, if temporary, click forward- see The Nose Knows. The amygdala is a set of twin organs, a part of your brain that sits right in between the most advance part of your brain- the frontal lobes and pre-frontal cortex- and the most primitive part of your brain- your “reptile brain” and brain stem. By tickling your amygdala you instantly and directly increase creativity, intelligence, pleasure, and also make possible a spontaneous natural processes known as “paranormal abilities”, although such things as telepathy and ESP are really as natural as breathing, or as easy doing simple math in your head. The ability to self stimulate the amygdala by something as simple as thought has been proven in laboratory experiments, such as those conducted at Harvard University research labs, 1999-2009, and can be tracked with modern brain scanning machines such as fMRI and PET… Indeed, thought is faster than light. Other sites of interest: EasyPaintYourCar.com is a painting site dedicated to learning how to paint a car yourself, even if you’ve never painted a car before. The REAL Story:

TD Lingo and

The Dormant Brain Research

and Development Laboratory

LINGO’S STORY:

“My story unfolds with me as a spearhead infantry scout for General Patton’s army in World War II. The war was horrible on the front lines. My group was one of the first to arrive at Hitler’s death camps to liberate the remaining survivors. After I got back home to the U.S. I went to the University of Chicago, and earned my bachelor and masters degrees in behavioral science, and almost completed my Ph.D. My experiences during the war drove me to ask but one question: “Why must I kill my brother?” To this, my school and professors had no answer. But one professor’s advice was “If there is an answer to this question, it’s up here,” pointing to his own gray head. “The answer has got to be in the human brain, but the research hasn’t yet been done in academe. You’re going to have to build your own research center if you are going to solve that riddle.”

“So, I dropped out of my Ph.D. program and started to figure out how to put my own research facility together. I didn’t have any money, but I could tell a good story! So, I figured, if there was a fortune to be made in a hurry, maybe I could do it in show business…Turns out I was right…I bought this mountain and built this place with a guitar, three chords, and nine folk songs.”

“I started out playing the local joints around Denver, and eventually I landed a spot on Groucho Marx’s You Bet Your Life TV show in Hollywood. I wore these old buckskins and I played the part of a backwoods mountain man to perfection. It was during that appearance that a New York producer spotted me. He must have said “I know a good phony when I see one, and that son of a bitch is a great one!” They flew me out to New York City and signed me to do a summer replacement show on NBC. My show was a weekly one where the “new” fad of folk singing (in the late 50’s) was featured. People like Burl Ives and Woody Guthrie showed up as guests, and performed with me. What a time we had…and I got paid $2000 an hour to do it!

On the last show, I looked straight into the camera and asked the million viewers who were watching, “If anybody out there has a mountain to sell, call me.” And sure enough, somebody called me up right from Colorado. At the end of the summer, I took my money, two grocery sacks full, and ran! I gave one to the IRS and I bought this place, Laughing Coyote Mountain, with the other. I started to axe timber and build log cabin labs. That was in 1957. No sterile formaldehyde bleak lab walls for me…give me fresh air and the beautiful sounds of the forest to think clearly!”

Brain Revolutionary Sarah in front of Lingo’s Home.

“For the next 30 years I dedicated myself totally to exploring behavior from the perspective of the human brain. My staff and I looked at every available bit of scientific research and philosophic/religious literature on the subject. We ran our own short and long term experiments with 309 test subjects. Now, up here, this environment of rugged mountain wilderness provides a total focus into the self that never can be replicated in any city, with all the noise and distractions. Up here, there’s no electricity, no TV, or movies, no four lane highways to get away from it all. You ARE away from it all!

Up here, you face yourself, your mind, and your brain. The brain lab still doesn’t have electrical power lines, or even running water. It’s just you, the hand water pump, a wood stove, and your central nervous system. Our lab’s records grew voluminous. These log structures were crammed full of file cabinets. The books line the walls from the stone floors to the ceiling rafters, 18 feet up. In the end, we discovered the mechanisms to release startling new intelligence, creativity, and pleasure, inside each and every human brain. And all our findings are supported and corroborated with foundation findings by scientists elsewhere.” as told by T.D. Lingo, 1989

TD LINGO YOUTUBE DOCUMENTARY HERE

Addendum 2007-2009 by Neil Slade

Some people are curious as to my connection with Lingo, and why his biographical material and work was found almost exclusively at my site from 1997-2007, and to this day is the principal site dedicated to TD Lingo’s work. Here’s the scoop and the story:

During the 1970’s at the height of flower power and self-exploration, Lingo drew a large audience from seekers across the nation, drawing people who were looking beyond the mere materialism of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The brain lab was a busy busy place, with students and staff continually flowing through, enthusiasm blooming. Along comes the 1980’s, and out went self-exploration and in came disco dancing. Alas, I was of the later generation, but not a dancer.

By the time I began frequenting the lab in 1982, most of the former staff had dropped out and instead gone back to “business as usual”. Clear evidence of this is the complete lack of color photographs published by anyone, save myself and the photos TD Lingo took of me helping him collect firewood around 1987 See Brain Lab Photo Tour. The few other black and white photos of Lingo that exist were taken from the mid 1970’s and earlier, showing TD Lingo as a much younger fellow. Surprisingly, when we did the photo shoot above, Lingo refused to have his picture taken, and instead insisted on documenting my own work and taking the photos himself using my camera. I attribute this to his generosity in passing on the “baton of brain fame” to me, rather than stepping into the spotlight again himself.

I saw little if any of the former brain lab participants through the 1980’s, and instead worked with TD Lingo to get city folk involved to start their own brain communities and support groups on the flat lands, and I worked to promote the lab’s work through the mass media.

Each year form 1983 onward I helped TD Lingo collect firewood each winter, as shown by the photos above, and recruited friends as I could to help, such as Sky and Eileen W., Glenda H., Fred P., Broz R. (privacy respected online, although these are some of my best friends), and others who can testify to this work.

From 1983 onward, TD Lingo and I did ongoing numerous public appearances together. These are a matter of public record as are the press releases and media stories covering the public events that I did highlighting Brain Self-Control and Education. Westword Newspaper alone eventually ran four separate full page stories on my work over a period of several years, in addition to full page stories in the Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, as well as appearances on each of Denver’s major television stations with Brain Self-Control as the focus.

There is no evidence of anyone else working with TD Lingo in this consistent and actualized manner from 1983-1993. Our sole efforts together to this degree are reflected in the public record and in written and dated correspondence from this period, of which I retain the originals as well as samples of TD Lingo’s correspondence with others from the last decade of his life.

Let’s look at the actual public record- here is a small sample:

AUTHOR’S BIO: Neil Slade- is an author of ten books on brain and behavior including The Frontal Lobes Supercharge, Tickle Your Amygdala, Brain Magic 2/Creativity From Another Dimension, Brain Tuning, and Secret of The Dormant Brain Lab and The Book of Wands (Vol. 1, 2, 3, and 4), and Cosmic Conversations. He is also a lifelong musical composer, seasoned concert performer, and teacher.

Slade was assistant to Brain and Behavior Researcher T.D.A. Lingo, Ph.B., B.Sci. M.A., for 11 years at Colorado’s Brain Research and Development Laboratory, established by director Lingo in 1957.

Since December 1997, Neil has been a regular guest on Coast To Coast AM with George Noory and Art Bell, the world’s most popular night time syndicated radio show.

Slade has also been a repeat guest of national PBS television and radio host Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove (Thinking Allowed), and has appeared on countless other radio, television, and internet broadcasts across the globe.

His educational books are easy to understand explorations of how the human brain works, and how to access creativity and problem solving.

The Frontal Lobes Supercharge has been translated and published by major European publisher Rowohlt Verlag*, and has remained in print in the U.S. for twenty-nine consecutive years.

*Rowohlt lists Neil Slade among its translated and published Pulitzer Prize winning authors, among these: Albert Camus, Jonathan Franzen, Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller, Toni Morrison, Vladimir Nabokov, Harold Pinter, Philip Roth, Jean-Paul Sartre, John Updike, and many others.

His most recent title, Secret Of The Dormant Brain Lab (2011) is an account of his work with brain researcher T.D.A. Lingo at his wilderness research facility.

Slade’s 1111 page quadrilogy, The Book of Wands (2010), is a recollection of his thirty years experience as a music teacher and brain educator.

Slade has ten original albums of music to his credit, and he has produced and directed two feature length films.

Specifically, my work with TD Lingo for the last eleven years of the lab’s existence was to take the brain lab’s findings, which had previously been mostly done on the facility, and to take it into the schools, hospitals, and set up study groups in town (Denver), as well as to refine the written materials, and make them more accessible to the mainstream.

It was my goal to become an independent brain education entity using the vast experience and knowledge that Lingo imparted to me. I further understood the need to evolve and fine tune to my own experience, adding my own special abilities and knowledge in music along with my college education and post graduate experience.

Throughout the 1980’s I worked in the public schools and all of Denver’s major psychiatric facilities teaching basic brain self-control methods defined at the lab but taught in my own customized way. I regularly ran therapeutic workshops at West Pines Psychiatric Hospital, Ft. Logan Mental Health Center, Denver General Psychiatric Ward, Mt. Airy Psychiatric Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Denver, Denver Head Injury Clinic, and other public and private facilities.

In an unprecedented original “Mind Music” program, I was employed by the principal of a Denver Public Elementary School to teach all 600 students and their teachers how to self-activate advanced levels of creativity, intelligence, and cooperative trust behavior by learning “brain basics”. We had the kids learn, illustrate, and teach each other brain anatomy and function. The program eventually led to teachers singing to their students and students dancing in the classroom.

In 1989 I published my Frontal Lobes Handbook (later revised into the Frontal Lobes Supercharge), which has found its way into public libraries and university and hospital libraries. TD Lingo took an active part in helping edit portions of this book, and I give him full credit for helping me to learn an effective writing style.

In October 1992, on my last physical visit to the mountain, TD Lingo was at hand when Sarah R. and I discussed the future of our brain rock band, “The Brain Revolutionaries“. We spoke and planned the possibilities of a traveling brain “medicine show” for which TD Lingo had written and submitted pages and pages of scripts for my consideration previously. Soon thereafter in the mail I received correspondence that included this amusing theme song for our group:

All the while, TD Lingo and I planned and presented radio and television appearances, wrote scripts, as well as continued to court the media. Although Lingo had corresponded with thousands of individuals across the globe, as well as had vast numbers of students and subjects come through his brain and behavior facility, his concepts and discoveries had as yet escaped widespread acceptance.

TD Lingo had a cancer scare requiring hospital tests and a cab ride from a student, but this was seventeen years earlier in 1978. He had shown no major health problems since then, but suddenly, in 1993, Lingo died of an apparent heart defect, a major burst blood vessel in the chest.

This came as a surprise to me since he had shown no illness or premonition of coming health problems whatsoever. No one had seen TD Lingo for months, including any of the old former staff, and my visit the previous late fall may have very well been the last one from an outsider up to the lab. (And no one presented such obvious information such as a recent visit for any reason at his funeral service held soon after). My last physical contact with him had been the previous October with Sarah and Nathan R. (shown above), as these friends and I helped with wood gathering as was the yearly tradition.

His mind remained strikingly observant and totally lucid to the end, as testified in his last correspondence to me, as well to another former student.

In Sept. 2009 one letter was shared that suggested that he had felt abandoned by other older staff members. He shared this in a single terse and unambiguous statement as little as a week after sending me a ten page glowing and optimistic letter of thanks looking towards the future. It should be clear that such sentiments were not expressed or sent to any other individuals at this time. Such a statement may have well been only intended for the eyes of this one person in whom TD Lingo may have felt particularly disappointed at the end of his life.

Several times I recall Lingo being asked, “What happens after staff and students “transcend” and pop their frontal lobes?” His answer, “They disappear. I never see them again.”

This wasn’t always literally true, and I have had contact even to this day with many former students and staff who have fond memories of their experience, and I have many letters in my basement from TD Lingo expressing his positive outlook.

In my case, in his final days, he did not share any of his personal health concerns with me, perhaps not to distract me from the ongoing positive thrust of my work in the public domain, perhaps not to disturb the lasting optimistic and positive image that I had kept in my mind all of the years, especially during the winter and early spring of 1993.

He mostly spared me of general negative feelings about others, but eventually mailed me copies of correspondence to warn me of the potential negative actions of other former students, such as this shown in the letter below. None the less, in this correspondence, originally only meant for R’s eyes, he states that as a whole, he felt (at least at this moment) that the old BINC (Brain In Nature Course) staff had abandoned and failed their life mission to continue The Brain Revolution.

(It should be noted that I was never a part of the earlier generation 1970’s BINC (Brain In Nature Course), and I worked totally independently with TD Lingo during the last decade, 1982 through to 1993.)

In regards to poverty, TD Lingo willingly took a vow of poverty so as to continue his work. He was not attached to material things and lived simply, remarkably in the wilderness even without running water and electricity. Throughout his life was proud that he did not get caught up in the accumulation of property and the debt generated by such, and that he spent his energies elsewhere.

When the Rocky Mountain News ran the multiple page story about TD Lingo and his work, they asked me to take the reporter and photographer and give them the guided tour of the brain lab.

My picture can be seen sitting on Lingo’s bunk bed in the news spread, and to no surprise, there is no mention nor proof of any former staff or students- because they had all left TD Lingo on his own for the most part, years before. I did not have to suggest or convince anyone at the Rocky Mountain News about who to call for TD Lingo’s eulogy.

In the presence of two witnesses, Sarah and Nathan R., TD Lingo had in October of 1992 expressed his intention that I carry on his work in addition to inheriting the physical property of the lab upon his retirement or death. Unfortunately, his demise was so sudden, he had never filled out the proper paper work nor a proper will. The funny thing was, one of my best friends Rachel M., had a VERY strange premonition about this, and repeatedly told me in November, “Get it in writing, now.”

I never pressed him for this, and it may have been a mistake, or it may have spared me legal battles with his surviving blood relatives. I will choose to believe it the latter.

Although absurd claims of a “living will” continue to be made, the only document referred to was written in distress by TD Lingo in 1978 when he believed he had cancer. This was never pursued because in actuality, it was an impossible claim given the delivered article of evidence: A casual mention of an idea in a letter never followed up on, despite given another fifteen years to do so!

Lingo, in fact, never willed anything to anyone at any time, and the do-it-yourself will kit found after his death was left completely blank.

Thus, when TD Lingo died, his brother obtained rights to the property per default. (Many years later, Lingo’s biological son was discovered living in a hospital and under the care of TD Lingo’s stepson. It wasn’t long before the biological son died, at which point all of the land was put up for sale by developers, and parceled into a half dozen lots, all intersected by a new dirt road that cut through the pristine 250 acre wilderness after the turn of the century.)

Named in the only surviving legal and relevant legal document was Harmony A. (name omitted here for privacy), a former staff member from the early 1970’s, who was named officially the brain lab’s corporate vice president. Hence, she rose the legal position of president of the non-profit Adventure Trails School, TD Lingo’s legal educational entity, upon his death.

***Harmony and I returned to the mountain together after the funeral services, and collected all of Lingo’s papers from the lab together. She insured that I retain originals of everything for my own continuing work, besides her own copies.

In additional to TD Lingo’s library of original manuscripts, I was awarded a couple of personal items through the family’s lawyer, Richard Hipp. This included one of Lingo’s guitars and his famous brain in a jar. I never obtained by any means any other personal effects of Lingo. The papers were the important stuff.***

Shortly thereafter, Harmony appointed additional corporate officers (post Lingo’s death) who had been for the most part absent from the scene for over a decade. Together, this spanking new self-formed legal establishment finally came to an arrangement with TD Lingo’s estate in their attempt to gain custody of all of his intellectual property, i.e. his writings. It should be noted that I had already had a great percentage of these in my possession from ten years of work with TD Lingo.

Although invited, I declined to become a corporate board member, and preferred to continue working independently without ties or constraints to any other participants (truly as Lingo himself had done) and as I had done all along. The new corporate board members hadn’t really been on the scene during all of the years I had been working with TD Lingo at least since 1982, and I didn’t see any point in creating an artificial partnership in Lingo’s absence. Any legal entitlement to any of TD Lingo’s works ended abruptly when the corporation failed to fulfill the legal requirements of their corporate status. (It was easy enough to do- but this newly created group didn’t manage one meeting a year together on a consistent basis.)

Within only a couple of short years, the newly formed corporate board disintegrated and lost all of its legal status. In contrast, my own work grew in momentum, as it had been while Lingo was alive and while we worked together over the previous 11 years.

http://www.westword.com/1998-07-02/news/think/2 “Think!”

I do not downplay the unquestionably significant role that others played in the Brain Lab before I arrived, but rather clarify that my role beginning in 1982 was to fill a more or less permanent void left as others departed the mountain for the most part, never to return again in any significant role.

In 1995 I created a web site dedicated to my brain and music work, “The Amazing Brain Adventure”, and it has now reached millions across the globe with an average of between 2500-3500 visitors a day which continues to the present (2011). I’ve written and published an additional 8 books, along with 20 audio and music CDs, and two films- one of which has inspired an another autobiographical film produced by an independent Irish film company. I’ve been a guest on internationally broadcast radio and TV news and talk shows (link for list) , including CBS news (Canadian), noted PBS host Dr. Jeffrey Mishlove’s program, as well as Art Bell’s Coast To Coast program discussing brain self-control and new ideas and methods which I developed in my own work since 1993.

There was no presence on the web speaking of the Brain Lab and TD Lingo besides my own web site until December 2005, nine full years after I had created my own site in 1996 dedicated to The Brain Lab, Lingo, and Brain Self-Control– and this is borne out by the Internet Archive records.

No one really cared enough to even mention his name on their site- until I started popularizing TD Lingo and the Brain Lab on an international stage via my regular appearances on Art Bell’s Coast To Coast Radio show in 1997. And then- it still took another 8 years for even one other person to start catching on that maybe Lingo and the Lab were worth writing about online. Of course- everyone wants to join in on a winning formula, and take credit for being a part. Jump on folks!

THE SELF-TRANSCENDENCE WORKBOOK

It should, most importantly be noted, that TD Lingo consciously and deliberately ABANDONED the publication of both earlier works as being obsolete (pre– Self Transcendence Workbook I papers and books), as well as the later STW II. I repeat, Lingo rejected his own early creative works and found that manuscripts BEFORE and AFTER the 1980 Self-Transcended Workbook HINDERED, rather than helped the general public in regards to learning Brain Self Control. So be it.

I agree with TD Lingo 100%: These less than perfect papers easily take people away from what we both found WORKS BEST. Lewis Carroll wrote two great books- Alice and Through the Looking Glass. His long winded Meant-To-Be-Opus Sylvie and Bruno (i.e. STW II and others), is universally regarded as not worth one’s time.

For the last decade of his life, Lingo made only one book available, and that was the 42 lesson STW Version I, that I continue to release with permission of his estate, and with previous knowledge of the single person to which TD Lingo granted legal custody of his work, Harmony A. I consider this to be his absolute best written work, concise, to the point, and relatively simple to grasp (though certainly NOT the first book I recommend reading on the subject of Brain Self Control- for that, I’ve created other books that I feel work far better). As for TD Lingo’s own manuscripts, nothing else outside the STW-I works nearly as well, and in fact, the other material can confuse people, and make matters worse.

Lingo got it as right as he ever would in STW-I and in a few choice essays that I’ve reproduced and annotated in Cosmic Conversations. For me, these are the cream of the crop, these are his magnum opus. The rest– passing interest, and at this point in history, less than useful, viewed from my 40 years of teaching.

Although of historical interest, I (as do others) always found that TD Lingo’s other writings were hard to interpret and were not as effective in conveying his personal core teachings, methods and direct one-on-one vibe, as it were. This was exactly the reason I wrote, with his blessing and help, The Frontal Lobes Handbook– expanded with additional original material in 1997 into The Frontal Lobes Supercharge.

TD Lingo had 35 years to make his books a success, including STW I. They did not accomplish or achieve his goals of widespread Brain Self-Control Education. In Lingo’s own words, I “stand on the shoulders, of those who came before me”. I’ve worked hard to complete the mission that he set as a goal- making Brain Self-Control a concept that vast numbers people can understand and utilize. These days, roughly 100,000 people a month visit my web sites.

I do not try to polish a piece of coal into a mirror, and I do not try to make something work that did not work for the general public for 35 years. I tried to learned from Lingo’s mistakes, and I believe I’ve improved upon a method of communication of these basic concepts of brain function, brain behavior, brain education, and brain self-control.

Never the less, although I owe a debt of gratitude to TD Lingo for a decade of friendship and work together, the bulk of my work is original, and I make no attempt to solely capitalize (financially or otherwise) on the work of others.

I continue the educational aspect of Lingo’s work which I did in partnership with him from 1982-1993, continued distribution of the original Self-Transcendence Workbook with the full knowledge and with permission of the TD Lingo estate, who further left in my legal possession both T.D. Lingo’s guitar, his brain in a jar, and the Lingo Library archives.

No other papers have been granted permission of publication by the Lingo Estate Any other manuscripts that may turn up elsewhere have been released against the express wishes of the sole legal copyright holders, i.e. The Lingo Family. Such claims of “Creative Commons” in regards to such are patently false and misleading. The motivation for re-writing history, for re-writing one’s place in history, is self-evident in the documents provided here.

There is only one truth, and that is obtained by examining all of the evidence, the public record, and all of the documented testimony.

In time if others lay claim to their own self-importance in the story of TD Lingo and the Brain Lab, regardless of the inaccuracy of their reporting and their convenient amnesia, well, success is always Xeroxed and siphoned. There will always be those who hallucinate. To see my efforts of promoting Lingo’s work alongside my own copycatted after so long a time, riding upon some convenient fibs and twisting of history, comes as absolutely no surprise to me at all. I will not be the last to speak of T.D. Lingo, or to claim to be a part of this story.

I was certainly only a little tiny piece of the pie.

WHO did what is not nearly as important as what WAS, what IS, and what YOU are doing now.

Names are not terribly important in the end.

We all will play our own role, and we all will play different roles, each important to the play.

As Lingo himself put it many times… “Your way is not my way, and my way is certainly not your way…”

That’s why this stuff is called Brain SELF-Control.

Take what you can from the story– and make it work for you as my friends and I have so delightfully done.

Lingo, 1989

He completely spared me of general negative feelings about others shown in the single letter show below. None the less, in this correspondence, perhaps only meant for R’s eyes, he states that as a whole, he felt (at least at this moment) that the old BINC (Brain In Nature Course) staff had abandoned and failed their life mission to continue The Brain Revolution.

(It should be noted that I was never a part of the earlier generation BINC (Brain In Nature Course), and I worked totally independently with TD Lingo during the last decade through to 1993.)

Below, a portion of a letter from Feb 1993 to “R” (BINC student, known anonymously as “Yoder” elsewhere online, after resigning from “The Brain Revolution” because of school sports program coaching (see Dec. 92 letter bottom of page):

…I didn’t mean to imply that you were lying. Sometimes you say things about Slade, and I am not sure if you are joking and being sarcastic….I do the same…we all do. That is one of the problems with the digital domain…it is hard…impossible…to pick up on things like sarcasm, jokes, etc. I know there is a way to snag a BBC, and I will slowly start looking for the way. He uses Winblows, so his box is open to hacking…I just want his address book.

Idea…let’s come up with a bogus account and user name. I will write him and do some lobbying. I will use a program that will block my IP address, and I will try to do it this Christmas.

These and a significant number of other email communications were a surprising revelation to see from an adult in a position of responsibility who taught computer use in a public high school. Upon third-party receipt of R’s own email stating his unannounced plan’s to pay me a personal “visit” in Denver after work, and given his admitted regular use of pharmaceutical medication for significant chronic pain and permanent physical disability, this prompted and required notification to his local law enforcement authorities to end any planned and ongoing harassment or any other surprises from R “Yoder” via the Internet or otherwise. Without question, this is one of the reasons R refuses to identify himself by name.

Nevertheless, this was followed by a series of fact twisting, guilt releasing, accusatory anonymous online posts by Yoder which may be regarded as strong evidence that Lingo’s analysis of R’s “non-transcendence” twenty years ago was not only accurate for that period, but indicated a long term prognosis.

Other fictionalized accounts of my relationship with Lingo and the brain lab work may be found online, but none are to be trusted as they are neither true, accurate, written by individuals who even knew or worked with Lingo, nor are they backed up by any proof or references. My best response to such baseless character assassinations can be summed up easily: Here as provided by myself and Fred Poindexter.

-N.S.

No such feelings were ever expressed towards me from Lingo, but rather the opposite, from which he never strayed.

This letter to me, from the same period, Jan. 1993 (The entire letter is shown at the bottom of this page):

(The complete 10 page letter of above can be seen at the bottom of this page)

He in fact never willed anything to anyone at any time. Although he had ample time to create a will, all letters and correspondence indicate he was thoroughly disappointed with the original staff by 1993. The only note left on the cover of his Do-It-Yourself Will Kit was this:

“(blank) em all.” You fill in the blank.

(In additional to TD Lingo’s library of original manuscripts, I was awarded a couple of personal items through the family’s lawyer, Richard H.. This included one of Lingo’s guitars and his famous brain in a jar.)***

Shortly thereafter, she appointed additional corporate officers (post Lingo’s death) who had been for the most part absent from the scene for over a decade.

Another former student (L.G.) spent a total of six weeks in TD Lingo’s BINC course and was given the harmless job as camp cook. The worst he could do would be to burn the potatoes. Now in the self-help business, at one point he notoriously claimed copyright to one of Lingo’s later manuscripts while nobody was looking, but was eventually discovered. He once claimed owning “The only known copy of this workbook”.

Turns out, key missing parts of this manuscript which he never had himself, came directly from me at his request. He very conveniently “forgot” that it was in fact myself who supplied him with missing chapters to the manuscript.

The correct history is that TD Lingo himself had refused a partnership with this individual in his previous attempt to gain control of the manuscript. The posthumous publishing attempt was later halted by the Lingo estate as being undesirable and was completely refused.

Of course, once this character was caught red handed– well, you can imagine vitriol he concocted with his reptile brain. Although you might find these comments in a dank online sewer someplace, no legitimate webmaster will post it.

In my archives I have some amusing and enlightening personal letters from TD Lingo expressing his opinion of such former students, but alas, we see enough dirt in pop culture these days and I see no point in dipping deep into the mud of others, besides the few references on this page.

Is there evidence anywhere of a single other person besides myself working with TD Lingo from 1979 onward? Helping him with classes? Publicity? Publishing? Press clips?

Nope. Zero. Make your own call.

Below is the last letter I ever wrote to Lingo dated 5/5/93, and discusses wrapping up production for my Brain Revolutionaries CD project, to continue to promote via music, my brain education for the masses via music and public performances. See his enthusiastic and positive outlook January 1993 letters to me above.

When I met others on the mountain for his funeral service, I was given back the letter and told it was found next to his bed in the cabin where he had been found.

By 1989, I had fully integrated the idea of the Brain Revolution into my own life, and my own career- the two were one and the same.

In 1993, The Brain Revolutionaries was the next step in sharing Brain Self-Control with the waiting public at large, and released our album shortly there after.

The Amazing Brain Music Adventure went online in 1996- and all those dedicated and involved have kept looking forward ever since.

Your Amazing Brain Adventure is a web site all about Tickling Your Amygdala- i.e. turning on the best part of your brain as easy as clicking on a light switch. This is done as easily as imagining a feather inside of your head stimulating a compass, the amygdala.

You will SMILE when you discover how SIMPLE and pain free it is can be to make a Kindle or make an eBook that you can post immediately online. I guarantee it.
I literally couldn’t find a decent manual or page online explaining how to do this. I looked and looked for a long time. A GOOD “How to make a Kindle” or a GOOD “How to make an eBook”- It just isn’t out there. And the few paid instructions that do exist and claim to work- qualify as “rip-off”– $30 and more for a PDF, or $100 to join a How-To web site. Ridiculous.
So I created the easy Do It Yourself instructions myself. Here it is. Congratulations for finding it.

I LOVE real printed books- and they will always provide us with pleasure and knowledge. But digital books are here to stay– don’t get left out!
Unfortunately, the Internet is full of HORRIBLE instructions and methods that ultimately fail to show people how to make a Kindle book and how to make an eBook without tedious and convoluted methods. The web is full of unnecessary complications, with problems, with unintelligible Instructions, with code—and – oh god—I’ve been there. I know how bad and confusing it generally has been. Amazon provides virtually no useful help at all, and neither does the other seller sites. And I TRIED the cheap online instruction books already out there. A total waste of good time and money.
Not here. Create a Kindle and create an ebook without frustration-
You will learn STEP BY STEP not only how to properly format and how to make a Kindle Book or how to make an Ebook, but I will also show you how easy it is to then follow through and publish your Kindle Book or eBook online. It costs you NOTHING to publish online.
Everyone who has a story to tell or instructions to give will LOVE publishing for Kindle, Nook, or iBook and will find it instantly rewarding- if not downright profitable!

The time to create a Kindle and create an ebook is here!
ANYONE- especially you- can do this without any previous experience, easily.
*                    *                    *
Without good guidance, it is hard to understand and figure out. I make it simple and easy for you. Anybody with no prior experience will be up and running in minutes.
When I first tried to learn how to make a Kindle, Nook, and iBook, I wasted DAYS AND DAYS becoming more and more frustrated with complicated online instructions that had me going in circles. I couldn’t believe it was so RIDICULOUS! There HAD TO BE A BETTER WAY. Why was learning how to make an ebook was still a mystery?
The main problem is that the software and instructions are out there– but in DOZENS of different places. Sites don’t agree with each other in showing how to create a Kindle or create an eBook. Bad help is mixed in with decent help EVERYWHERE. NOBODY CONSOLIDATED and PUT TOGETHER JUST THE ESSENTIAL AND BEST WAY TO WORK and GET THE JOB DONE. What is the matter with people anyway?!?
But I am one of those stick-to-it problem solvers.
I also have zero tolerance for things that are unnecessarily complicated.
What I finally discovered and synthesized, was something that I found nowhere else online. I believe my method to make a Kindle and to make an eBook is by far the simplest, fastest, most reader friendly, and the most practical method for creating ALL digital eBooks and getting them online quickly. You will be able to sell (or give away for that matter) your digital books with the minimum of fuss and the maximum of return.
I took what is absolutely necessary, trimmed the fat, and threw all the other garbage instructions out. I STREAMLINED eBOOK MAKING INSTRUCTIONS— so now, you can ZOOMMMMM through the process too! I leave nothing out, like so many other methods.
I can hardly believe what people go through to try and make a Kindle, make an eBook of any type- iBooks, Nook Books, and other eBooks. Suffering and frustration is completely un-necessary. If you have spent time trying all of the ridiculous and complicated methods– you will not believe how simple my method is.
It will be FUN for you!
You will not need to know any HTML or CODE. You can use FREE SOFTWARE available online, or you can use Word (and Adobe Elements for illustrations and images).
If you have a story to tell, or instructions to give- digital books are an easy way to provide yourself with income with zero capital and money upfront. You can spend your time being CREATIVE and get your material instantly to an audience of BILLIONS via the World Wide Web.
Are you ready? Okay! Let’s DO IT! You’ve got nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain-
Your new life as an author or publisher is just MINUTES away… Make a Kindle book and make every other type of ebook and enjoy it-

September 2011:
My experience with eBooks was this: I was a successful print author, and decided to add Kindle and other eBook versions to my catalog of titles. I tried to follow the existing instructions online for doing all of these things that I propose to you now. No one had created a concise comprehensive guide, and my experience was at first, likely the same as everyone else out there, confusing, frustrating, and filled with all kinds of dead ends. As a beginner at making my own eBooks, I found the existing material on this subject of eBook making either incomplete, hard to understand, confusing to use, wildly contradictory or just plain TERRIBLE with a lot of mistakes and bad advice.
Ironically, that experience was my motivation and opportunity to write this book to make the job simple, easy, and quick for anyone. This book tells you everything you really need to know and shows you how to do it correctly the first time, step by step.
I’ve selected only what is essential, practical, and simplest- and gotten rid of all of the confusing and useless junk that you will find lurking to lure creative literary victims everywhere else.
This short book allows you to skip all of the baloney and go right to the fun and success of creating your own eBook and getting it online, without any hassle- and enjoy doing it from beginning to finished product!
I’ve broken down the process into teeny tiny steps, and I haven’t left anything out. You can skip what you don’t really need for your specific project, and find what you do need later for a different situation.
The instructions contained here are comprehensive and will fulfill the needs of any eBook writer or publisher.
Everything is explained in simple language that everyone can understand the first time, even if you’ve never done anything like this before. You cannot fail. You will have a smile on your face as you go along, and an especially big smile when you’ve crossed the finish line.
WHY SHOULD YOU DO THIS YOURSELF?
1) Making a Kindle and any other type of electronic book is far easier than you can imagine.
2) EBook formatting by anyone else will cost you far more money than it should, given the actual amount of time it takes (not very much!)
3) Can you completely trust someone else to do this job, the way you want it done?
4) And very importantly, you will certainly want to make updates, changes and modifications to your book, quickly and without any hassle or additional cost.
You want to control your eBook publication yourself, have it done exactly right, have it done instantly and at no cost, and have it completed any time you choose without waiting.
But personally, as a professional writer and publisher, I simply do not have the time, energy, or interest to waste jumping through endless procedures that don’t bring results- and you shouldn’t either.
I’ll show you what works the best- That’s my job here, to give you a clear, simple, and complete method to follow for publishing your title for all of the eBook devices and applications out there, and to do it most efficiently.
YOU CAN BE PUBLISHED, IN ONE DAY
Everyone has a story to tell or a lesson to share with others.
However, until the Digital Age and the World Wide Web, it could be nearly impossible for most people to get published and distributed successfully.
In the past, getting a publishing deal that results in actually getting paid a decent wage for one’s writing efforts- has been akin to winning the lottery. This is especially true for those new and inexperienced in book writing and publishing. And even if you are eventually published and put into print, unless you win the unlikely treasure jackpot of having a best seller- in the end, a writer rarely sees much of anything for his or her efforts.
If one manages to actually get picked up by a printed publisher, you are still at the mercy of corporate whim and the publicity budget. You will be dropped like a hot potato if your book doesn’t sell big. You probably will get nothing for promotion, and that job will be left to you and your own wallet. And even if your book does sell, you’ll see a pittance of the sales as your royalties- if anything, and they will be slow in coming.
Conversely, publish yourself on Amazon Kindle and you get 70% of the sale price for the digital book, immediately. Sell the book on your own website, and you keep an even nicer 95% or more as profit after costs.
Read the headlines these days to see what major authors are foregoing “the big publishing deal” to go it completely on their own digitally, for a much more deserved piece of the pie.
Now, thanks to digital online publishing, you can successfully publish yourself with zero risk electronically, and at zero cost.
You can generate a modest or even a substantial income without any outlay required by other forms of print.
In a single day you can have your manuscript made available to virtually billions of online potential customers, millions of which already own and love to use their digital eBook reader.
There is an audience out there for EVERYTHING. Certainly, many readers will be excited to get your eBook, no matter what you write about and even no matter your writing style or how “well” you write. (Quality is always subjective anyway.)
I guarantee SOMEONE will want to read your digital book, no matter what.
It will cost you nothing. You can create your eBook for free, as well as distribute it for free. You have everything to gain, and absolutely nothing to lose- not even big blocks of your time.
You wouldn’t think so if you have seen one of those commercial “We’ll format your eBook for you” web sites that charge dollars per page, or a few hundred dollars for a single book. What a racket! No need to go that route. The idea of paying someone hundreds of dollars or even less to transform your manuscript into an electronic book is ABSURD. Do it yourself- better, faster, and assuredly costing you nothing except a little bit of time.
Once you’ve written your book, most people know that they can create a free web site or blog to tell people about their project, document, or book. The best web building sites are as easy (or easier) to use as writing a letter or creating a flyer on Microsoft Word.
What most people have yet to learn is that one can further create, publish and distribute their book via Kindle, Barnes & Noble, and get it on iBooks- again, nearly effortlessly and at no cost.
Maybe even more attractive is publishing and selling a perfectly created eBook on your own web site or blog- with or without participating any other online seller.
If you can use a computer, you can make and publish your eBook successfully, all by yourself in many ways. You are the boss. You are in control.
The 21st Century is a golden age for writers.
THE SECRET MYSTERY OF eBOOKS
Until now, the process of creating an eBook, properly formatted to distribute via Kindle, Nook, other eBook formats, and iBook has been a relentless and frustrating mystery.
You would think that Amazon and other distributors who gain from having eBooks online would make the directions for doing this easy to understand. They don’t. Amazon’s actual instructions for making a Kindle book is a spider’s web and a black hole from which you will likely never escape alive
You would think one soul would put some good instructions online. Well, I couldn’t find any web sites- ZERO- that answered all of the necessary questions in one place. I looked.
It’s ridiculous.
For those who remained stumped despite their best efforts, Amazon and other online digital book re-sellers “recommend” companies who offer the paid service to complete this mysterious task for you. How convenient.
The sin is that actually taking a manuscript and turning it into any kind of eBook is not at all complicated. I was just amazed that no one had yet written a decent, concise, uncomplicated, and yet complete guide for making eBooks. So I stepped up to the plate.
There are just a few things to keep in mind. I’ve organized and presented the instructions here so that if you do the process once and make one eBook following these easy directions, you might just have it memorized forever.
WHAT IS AN eBook FOR, ANYWAY?
It is to SERVE THE READER. No more, no less.
An electronic book has a few unique requirements to do its job well-
1) It should resemble a printed book in a logical, attractive, and correct presentation- It should simply be easy to read.
2) It must have a linked Table of Contents that allows the reader to instantly navigate to any chapter in the book.
3) It should properly display images if needed, without distortion.
4) It should work similarly in every type of electronic book reader or equivalent computer eBook application- and you shouldn’t have to reformat your manuscript repeatedly for every conceivable kind of eBook reader.
THE EASIEST ROUTE TO AN EBOOK
I was SHOCKED to find others STILL recommending people edit using plain text editors, CODE or HTML to make their eBooks. Such a thing is absolutely unnecessary and a waste of energy. Really quite insane, and nothing most people should even consider.
Making your eBook fulfilling all the needs for a professional presentation is easily accomplished simply using Microsoft Word as your manuscript editor, (or the free Office Writer .doc creation software)- all without using HTML, any other text editor, or resorting to manipulating code and tags. Using Word or Open Office to create an eBook is a total breeze and the smartest way to work, bar none. I find it absolutely incredibly that people are still doing it any other way. It is perfect for creating any type of eBook.
Your Word file must be modified slightly in the correct way to upload for Kindle and other formats, otherwise your eBook will not look right and will not allow proper navigation for reading. But the changes are not difficult to make. And these simple changes will be light years faster and easier than any other method for anyone, but especially for authors who are not familiar with html. The instructions and method follows in this book. It’s all a snap!
In this efficient manual you will be shown how to first make a SINGLE FILE that can be used across the board for the three types of eBooks- Kindle, Nook, iBook, and all others with a minimum of modifications to work for all. (Other readers such as Sony, Kobo, and iRiver use the same type of language as the Nook, i.e. “.epub” files.)
The easy step by step instructions provided here will supply you with a foolproof method for creating your own electronic book, complete with images and illustrations if you choose.
You can create your eBook from scratch, or modify a previously existing manuscript with some quick changes. You’ll enjoy the process, too.

IMAGES
Electronic books have their own requirements for images, and I’ve written a special chapter to easily guide you through this process to make your images and illustrations look their best for Kindle and others. Again, I’ve kept this process as easy and as straight forward as possible with a minimum of fuss.
READY FOR SUCCESS?
You will soon have your electronic book finished in no time at all. It will look perfect and it will work perfectly for everyone and for all of the various brands of eBook readers and applications.

PREFACE
How To Use This Book
First, completely read through these instructions before beginning.
If it looks at first like a lot of numbered steps, have no worries. There are 60 seconds in every minute, but no one would claim a minute is a long time. Similarly, these are all simple as pie operations which have been broken down into bite-sized pieces that will cover every aspect of making a perfect eBook for everyone.
To start, merely become familiar with the overall process. In making your eBook you will have a couple of options to choose from, and you will want to know about those choices before you begin.
You will begin all eBook conversion projects at “Part One: Easy Make A Kindle Book”.
You will create all versions of your eBooks in the same way, starting with creating a book for Kindle. After you make your Kindle book, you will make just a couple of small changes to make a Nook eBook and for all other epub formatted books. After you have done that, it will additionally be ready to upload for Apple iBook readers using another simple process.
You do not actually have to publish a Kindle versioned eBook, but formatting and converting all of your eBooks will require the same initial steps as a Kindle eBook requires.
Follow the steps one at a time.
If you are reading this on an eBook device or reading application, to navigate in this manual to the Table of Contents, and thus skip to any chapter or instruction from there, just click one step to the “Start” or “Beginning” of this book with your favorite eBook reader.
Frequently save your work with a unique file name as you go along. In case you make a mistake, you can simply re-open a previous file version, and go again from there. DO NOT ERASE or OVERWRITE your saves but rather give each save a separate name such as “eBook_1.doc”, then “eBook_2.doc” and so on. You might find that you like an earlier version of your book better at some point. If you don’t give each save its own name, you’ll copy over and delete all of your previous versions.
Continue to rename each new file as you convert your .doc file to make your Amazon Kindle book and epub books, i.e. file names like “eBook_1.epub” and “eBook_2.epub”.
This same habit of saving all of your files should extend to your images as well, as you may create images of slightly different sizes and dimension, and you don’t want to discard an image that you may have to re-tweak later on going back to an earlier version.
I use Microsoft Word 2003 as my own application for writing books. I feel that it is the simplest to work with and that it provides all of the tools I need. There is no advantage to using a newer version of Word. My instructions will give tips on menu navigation using Word 2003, but you may use a later version if you choose, or for that matter Open Office Writer, free at Open Office.
Although I don’t give separate instructions for creating your manuscript modifications with Open Office, the program is so similar to Word, that anyone can easily duplicate the steps for that free program by exploring the Open Office Help menu for specific task instructions if the intuitive solution isn’t immediately obvious.
Just use any program’s Help menu if you are not sure how to get to the formatting option that you need to use.
eBOOK OUTLINE WIZARD
This book first presents your eBook making procedure step by step, with a short explanation “why” when necessary so you know the reason behind these instructions.
For your convenience, the step-by-step procedure is then reproduced as a simple numbered outline at the end of the book, the EBOOK OUTLINE WIZARD that you may use for simple reference later on. You may skip to this outline by clicking on the link to this outline from the Table of Contents.
A COUPLE OF OPTIONS
One other suggestion that I will make is that you might like to acquire two pieces of optional hardware for your eBook creation process. These are NOT absolutely necessary, but can make your job easier and faster to some degree.
1) Get a mouse with a quick scroll wheel. I use a Logitech VX Nano Cordless notebook mouse (my favorite, about $30 on eBay) that has a scroll wheel in the center that can be clicked on or off to work as a fast flywheel. This allows very rapid and precise scrolling through pages and text. Using a quick scroll mouse is like driving a race car- Once you use one of these, you will have a hard time going back to a plain mouse without one.
2) Get hold of an actual Kindle or other eBook reader (or even both) to check your work as you go. Although you can absolutely create your eBook without either physical reader and use the Kindle Direct Publishing preview screen, and the Nook preview (on Barnes and Noble PubIt web site) or Adobe Digital Editions for .epub types of books, I’ve found that using a physical reader to check work as one goes along to be convenient, fast, and more accurate in showing you what customers and readers will actually see using their physical portable eBooks device.
Kindle uses its own eBook language (.azw file), whereas Nook and all others use the .epub type of file. The Kindle will not read epub files and vice versa.
You can save money and snap up a physical reader for cheap on Craigslist or eBay. It will be well worth your green energy to acquire and use as you go along, and it makes checking your work a little simpler- and fun! And when you’re done with your own eBook, you can enjoy reading other eBooks with it as well. (More on this subject of “spend some money on a reader” down the page…)
One wonderful thing about an electronic book is that you can make your book uniquely interactive with the Internet- something a printed book cannot do. Your eBook can open up a whole world to your reader in a completely new way readers have never experienced before. Just use your imagination- !
iBooks are read on an iPad or other Apple device only. None the less, you can create and upload an iBook online and never touch or own any Apple computer or iPad at all.
Once your book is published, you can actually send yourself a copy of your book and read it on the free Kindle or Nook reader application for PC or Mac.
ORDER OF INSTRUCTION
These instructions are presented in the order in which you would create a book from scratch or in the order of modifying an existing manuscript. The procedure of converting and publishing all of your eBooks will become second nature to you very quickly.
KINDLE, NOOK, iPAD, or Other??
For a moment I will point out a few differences between, at present, the two major manufacturers of eBooks readers: the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes and Noble Nook.
As I’ve pointed out already, you can’t read an epub book on a Kindle, and you can’t read a Kindle book on black and white Nooks, a Sony Reader, and other similar black and white .epub readers. This means you will get your book files for Kindles and Nooks from two different sources, the file will be different for each. But most popular titles are usually available for Kindle as well as Nook and others.
However, you can read both types of files on the same PC and/or Mac just by using the free reader Kindle or .epub application for your particular type of computer.
So please note: To make an eBook that will supply all readers using everything, you must make two conversions of your original Word document manuscript: One will be saved as .azw for Kindle, and the other will be saved as a .epub.
The Kindle, the regular Nook and newer Nook Touch, Sony, Kobo and iRiver readers all use a black and white display (“e-Ink”) that is highly visible in any normal light, even in bright outdoor light. The Nook Color, iPads, and tablet computers all use a color LCD screen of one size or another.
At present, the Kindle can open up linked web pages while still reading an eBook, where as a black and white display standard Nook cannot. Kindle has a modest, but dependable black and white browser. The new Touch Nook has a somewhat limited browser that works to some degree.
Nook Color (as well as any computer running the apps) will show web pages in glorious color. Also, you can view flash videos (like YouTube) whereas none of the grayscale black and white eInk viewers can do that.
If you are considering getting one of these units, do you want a relatively inexpensive eBook reader for a little browsing and that has long battery life? Or do you want something with a fraction of the battery life, but looks wonderful for color illustrated books and the web? Do you need to see the screen and read except in bright outdoor light?
Decisions, decisions.
Kindle has a built in minimal but a quite usable type of audio book reader to read your book to you while you are driving or just want to listen instead of read. Both double as Mp3 audio players for when you want music or for when you have an audio book. But Nook won’t play independent music audio while you read, while the Kindle does.
The black and white display readers use a minimum of battery, and easily will go for a week or more on a single charge. Nook Color and tablets start in the claimed eight hour battery life range.
Amazon at present offers the largest selection of books. As time goes on, for black and white display, the Nook will probably offer the same features as the Kindle 3. But presently for me, the Kindle clearly comes out on top with its’ combination of features for a black and white viewer..
Sony and other products get excellent reviews, and they sell three new readers with features you may prefer to either Kindle or Nook. Or you may not. The other online libraries are certainly not as extensive as Kindle or B&N’s Nook.
As said earlier, but worth emphasizing, notably, Kindle at present will not display PDF or epub files- so if that is a must for you, get another brand of reader besides Kindle.
The iPad and Color Nook can do other kinds of portable computer pad operations as opposed to the Kindle and regular Nook which are more limited. There are a great many small 7” tablet computers that for the most part will all run the free download Kindle and Nook eBook reading applications, and these also will display color images in a book, unlike the eInk readers which render images in grayscale (shades of black and white).
The Nook Color is a very good touch screen portable pad at around $250, whereas the iPad is a hefty $500 for the lowest priced model. I’ve modified my Color Nook with an online hack so it operates as a much more flexible full function Android tablet, and it essentially will do much of what the iPad will do at half the price, albeit it has no camera or USB input/output. Unfortunately, the hack makes it a little more difficult to upload my own .epub files for review when working on a manuscript, and when using it for editing, I prefer the native Nook operating system.
Frankly, if you want to do computer types of activities- get a tablet computer, netbook, or an iPad. Toshiba makes a great netbook for under $250, you can put both Kindle and epub and iBook reader applications on it, and still use it as a completely functional PC with very nice real keyboard- and it is not much bigger than a Nook Color. (The lack of physical keyboard is my main objection to ALL tablet computers, given that a physical keyboard is essential as a writer of any serious degree. You just can’t efficiently write anything of length on a flat screen “virtual” keyboard.) Bear in mind, netbooks have a color LCD screen- and like the iPad and Nook Color, it is not as easy to read in bright outdoor sunlight and has less battery life than a Kindle or any other reader with an e-Ink black and white screen.
The Kindle 3 is a bargain at around $139, and the Nook Touch is the same price. I’ve seen the Sony pocket edition going for a mere $119 at my local Sony Style mall store. (These prices are as of August 2011, and will likely get even lower as time passes.). Again, you can save money by shopping around for a perfectly working used reader.
As for the other eBook readers, if you have one, you can use it for viewing epub files. I am not a fan of Apple proprietary schemes, but if you like Apple products and own them, the iPad can be used to view any type of file with the properly installed application software.
A computer or an eBook reading application will display your book somewhat differently than a physical reader because of the larger display and the customizable page size that an eBook reader allows. Personally, I create my own books and then cross check them on my Kindle 3 and then on my Nook Color, and then with Adobe Digital Editions and Kindle for PC/Mac. That combination will cover every possibility: If it looks good using those, it will look good on anything.
Incidentally, for epub files, my favorite eBook computer reading application is actually the Adobe Digital Edition (free from Adobe). I have found the Barnes and Noble Nook application for eBook computer reading very buggy and unfriendly as an epub viewer.
WHAT DO YOU REALLY NEED?
To emphasize this point, you do NOT have to buy anything to create and check your eBook. You can make and proof your newly made eBook without any additional physical readers, and use just your computer and the online and free application software to do everything.
For myself, I’ve selected the option to supplement these with a physical reader to make my proofreading a bit faster.
The Kindle allows me to quickly review .azw Kindle books and its links into the web, and shows me the book as it will appear using the Kindle for PC/Mac application on computers as well. Amazon instantly (very nearly) converts my .doc manuscript through email, and sends it right to my Kindle to inspect- at no charge. It is a dependable conversion method that creates my eBook as perfectly as I see it in my original Word document, and without formatting errors. Thank you Amazon. Nicely done.
If your manuscript has images or illustrations, and you do not have a physical Kindle to proofread your Kindle eBook manuscript for publishing, you will not have a dependable free method of checking your work until you publish it. This is not true of epub books. That is because the Kindle preview screen on their web site doesn’t preview your eBooks images perfectly, i.e. without occasional and unpredictable display errors (like adding blank pages that aren’t really there for anyone else to see). And, I have not found another dependable conversion method other than Amazon’s own. So, the free method is not great for proofreading a book with pictures. Once you publish on Amazon, you have access to the .azw files to view on Kindle for PC/Mac, an acceptable method to proofread for formatting errors. But it’s a very slow process to repeat, as it takes a couple of days for Amazon to put your file up for examining.
So if you have illustrations in your book, I say bite the bullet and get at least a used Kindle 3 from somebody.
On the other hand, most of the operations for epub books can be done and then accurately viewed in Adobe Digital Editions software using your regular computer. This will give you an accurate feedback of how your book will look in any other physical eBook reader or computer reading application.
That’s all the preliminaries-
Okay- here we go!

*******************************************************************************

Part One:

Easy
Make A
KINDLE BOOK
Do these same steps first for ALL formats and devices.
Regardless of whether you are making a Kindle, Nook, any other epub, or an iBook- follow the procedure to make a Kindle book first. You will complete the steps for the other formats after you follow all of the instructions to format for Kindle.

*******************************************************************************
Chapter 1 Kindle Book
GENERAL FORMATTING
1. Set your book’s PAGE SIZE:
OPTION 1) As an overall recommendation: Leave your page size as your originally written manuscript. This will work fine for any book without any illustrations.
OPTION 2) If you want to see what your book will look like on a typical physical Kindle or other typical electronic book, you may resize your page size to 3.5” X 4.75” to approximate the viewing page size for Kindle (Version 3 and others) and a few common physical eBook readers.
OPTION 3) If you have large images that play a principal role in your book, almost certainly you want to setup your manuscript as 8.5” X 11” page size.
In Microsoft Word, you can change the page size by menu navigating to: File/ Page Setup/ Paper
To set up your default measurements units to “Inches”, navigate to: Tools/ Options/ General/ Measurement Units
>>Bear in mind, your Word document will NOT resemble your final eBook EXACTLY as it appears in either a physical eBook reader or an application like Kindle for PC. But it will look exactly right when it appears converted as an eBook in both a physical reader and in an eBook computer reader application.
Okay, let me now explain WHY there is no hard and fast answer to this issue of page size.
Page size is the dimensions of your original manuscript, the one you create your book in Word. (Page size is determined by the menu: File/Page Setup/Paper menu navigation in Word)
eBooks IGNORE page size, and simply display line by line of your text, and resize images to fit the window of your eBook reader. This is true not only of the physical Kindles and Nooks, but of the computer applications that allow customers to read their purchased eBooks on their home computer or laptop. Importantly, many users DO read their eBooks using the Kindle application, or Nook application, or Adobe Digital Editions application.
If your book consists ONLY of text- it doesn’t matter at all what page size your manuscript is formatted in. The book will simply be laid out line after line in the eBook reader or application. So, if you have text only- it doesn’t matter what page size your manuscript is. Use whatever page size you have already selected to write your manuscript in- 8.5 X 11, 6 X 9, or any other.
HOWEVER- and this is a big however- if you have images in your book, especially full page images, the images will automatically be limited by the page size you’ve chosen, and this can create problems if you want to see big full size illustrations in a Kindle, Nook, or iPad application to read eBooks.
If you have setup a 6” X 9” page size for your original Word manuscript, if someone opens the book on a computer using the Kindle, Nook, or Adobe eBook application- the size of the image will never be bigger than your chosen page size, and in many cases, it will be difficult to zoom in to make the picture bigger.
For example, I had one customer who created an illustrated kids book, with big full size, full page illustrations- but he formatted his manuscript as a 3.5” X 4.75” page size as recommended by another (typically WRONG) DIY eBook instruction found online. This rendered all of his illustrations teeny tiny when the book was opened up on an iPad 10” display or on any regular computer display. Once he increased the page size to 8.5 X 11, the illustrations showed up nice and large universally, no matter what device or application he viewed his book on.
If you have a book that is text only, you may want to use a 3.5” X 4.75” page size, only because it will allow you to preview as you are writing and editing what your book will look like on a regular Kindle or typical black and white eInk display found on the majority of present eBook readers. To see what your eBook will actually look like while format editing in Word can be helpful and helps you to gauge many aspects of your presentation.
However, if you have illustrations, I recommend the 8.5 X 11 page setup size, to allow all illustrations to be viewed full size in every instance and across all types of readers and applications.
Even if your book has zero illustrations, you can still use the 8.5 X 11 page size, or any other page size for that matter, and you’ll do fine.

You will do it in a FRACTION of the time you would waste waiting for someone else to do it for you- and you won’t have to spend a cent getting it done. And you’ll have better results. The time to create a Kindle and create an ebook is here!

ANYONE- especially you- can do this without any previous experience, easily.

*                    *                    *
