CAR PAINTING IN COOL OR WINTER WEATHER is OKAY!

As fall and winter weather approaches in most of the USA (and whenever or wherever else) the question arises:

Can I paint when it’s cold outside?

Of course.

In fact, the demonstration video was made while it was RAINING and it was 45 degrees outside.

Here are the things to remember for cold weather…

1) Make sure the temperature where you are painting is at least 55 degrees.

If it is colder than that, the paint will not set quickly enough, and will have much more tendency to run and drip. Even though urethane paint is catalyzed and hardens from chemical interaction, and will dry in almost the coldest temperatures, the RATE at which it dries is effected by ambient temperature. If it “dries” to slowly, it will run.

Although 55 degrees is on the cool side, and warmer temperatures will allow faster setting and drying, it is possible to successfully paint at this temperature.

2) Paint inside a paint booth, or inside a garage.

In such an environment you can easily control the temperature with heaters and heat lamps.

Be aware, PAINT IS FLAMABLE— well DUH.

Don’t have a flame going where you are painting. DUH.

3) Outside, you can, as I did, paint inside a covered car port.

Hang up plastic sheeting, and warm the place up with halogen lamps, and monitor the temperature.

4) Avoid days of high humidity.

Moisture cures urethane paint, so any increased humidity in the air is NOT good. However– if you have heated the area you are painting in, and moisture is not coming in, you will be okay.

Booksurge VERSUS LULU

I’ve been struggling with BOOKSURGE like an IDIOT because I mistakenly thought they would be the cheapest and easiest way to get a listing on Amazon, and perhaps boost my sales. WRONG!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been published on LULU for quite some time as an additional outlet for my online books– although I do MUCH better handling online downloads myself (more money by a long shot), I finally gave up physical printing out of my home office and let LULU do it for me.

It was a little bit of a learning curve, but I didn’t realize until tonight that LULU could get me on AMAZON for $50.

OH LIVE AND LEARN

Now here is a little more comparison for you that you should find interesting… and a warning to all DIY publishers
I’ve been dealing with BookSurge for WEEKS now, trying to get my book printed and on Amazon–
http://www.easypaintyourcar.com

I was thinking of going with Lightning Source, only to discover BookSurge would get me on Amazon, and give me more percentage of the sale, AND give me an ISBN in the deal. Lightning Source told me to go buy 10 ISBNs for $300, which I did 😦

but there’s more to this tale…

I’ve been selling on LULU for quite a long time, and even without trying have ended up in the top of “How To Paint Your Car” in Google (but don’t get me started on Google!!!!)

Setting up the book on LULU was a relative breeze compared with BookSurge, which has been a complete headache and NIGHTMARE.

Now, I’ve printed my own books at home on a half dozen Canon printers for a long time, and I am NOT working for LULU- but let me throw a few comparisons at you:

1) BookSurge charges a minimum of $99 just for the basic set up, you still do all the work making the required PDF and cover files–

Lightning Source also would charge about $80+

LULU charges $0 for setup

2) BookSurge gives you an ISBN with your $99.

Lightning Source doesn’t. Again, I forked out $300 for 10 ISBNs before I learned BookSurge would give you one for free with your order.

Lulu ISBN— $50, and you own the ISBN as well (like the others.

NOTE:I have sold books online and in bookstores for 10 years without an ISBN. Probably about 50,000 books.

3)Once your book is sold online, on Amazon– BookSurge gives you a whopping 25% of your retail price.
Whoppeed. Okay, better than a standard publishing deal, but they do virtually nothing to advertise your book for you accept give you 1000 words to describe your book on the Amazon page.

Lightning source gives you even less than 25% of the retail. Wow.

LULU is giving me about 50%.

If I had continued on my qwest for the holy grail via BookSurge, I would have to DOUBLE my sales to make the same amount of money that LULU gives me.

I’ve busted my ASS to meet the booksurge publishing requirements, and they STILL haven’t okayed my book.

I did it on LULU IN ONE DAY.

And word is, the LULU copies are BETTER than BookSurge quality– which apparently is CRAP:

Booksurge vs. Lulu

Booksurge. The world-wide and growing print-on-demand company. It’s got machines in the US, the Netherlands and Australia. Japan next.

Lulu. Coming up fast (my books specifically at: Donna’s Lulu.).

Here’s the latest:

Lulu is getting a machine in Spain. AND they have free upload.

Lulu offers individual customers a cheaper direct-order route.

Lulu’s intense-color covers do NOT flake, nor do they get beat up so fast. After a month, a Booksurge book looks like it has dandruff. A Lulu book does NOT. And a Lulu cover doesn’t get so curly and bent up; it’s tougher.

They BOTH have great bindings.

Lulu has Amazon access, too, and provides ISBN numbers, for low prices.

I finally wised up and sent BookSurge notice that they were FIRED.

🙂 I love giving assholes the finger.

If you want to see some REALLY interesting dope on Booksurge– do a search “Booksurge Sucks” and see what you find.

THE REAL POOP ON PAINTING YOUR CAR

The reason I learned how to do car painting is because I owned a rare collector car that would have cost me $3000-$4000 minimum to have the body work and paint done- and it needed it. AND, I could not afford this.

So, I contacted one of my friends, perhaps the best expert on fiberglass repair and body painting anywhere, Mr. Vic Cooper in Denver. He regularly repairs and repaints the most expensive, the most exotic passenger and race cars, from Lotuses to Lambos to hot rods. He taught me how to do this over a long period of time. Since I am a writer and film maker (and he and other experts I knew are not), I translated everything I learned from him into a form that people could easily learn from right off the web.

I further got regular advice from an exceptionally good paint shop in Denver that specializes in automotive refinishing.

I spent months learning what works, and what doesn’t work- and when I was done I had done my first car, my white Lotus that you see on the book cover. It turned out perfectly. And the method I used can be applied to any vehicle, fancy or plain, big or small, boat or car, truck, bike, or motorcycle.

There are tons of BAD books and DVDs that look good on the surface, but in practical use were complicated and had stuff in there that was unnecessary. I wanted to make material available that WORKED as advertised, and was not overly complicated or poorly written.

You may find yourself in a similar position looking at painting your vehicle- but without having done this previously, or have done it making many mistakes and not having things turn out so good. You may not know anyone who knows how to do this, or has the time to show you.

I will show you, because it is my business teaching people- and I’ve been a teacher for 35 years.

If you decide it is best to paint your car yourself, you will need a spray gun, a compressor, the paint, some miscellaneous small tools, sandpaper, and a certain amount of patience.

You can do it in a car port, garage, paint booth, or even in your driveway- you decide what is best for you.

You can borrow or rent the gun and compressor and save money that way, and pay about $100 for the paint and sandpaper, and if you read the instructions you can come up with a decent paint job on most cars. You will also need odds and ends which you may or may not have, light solvents, gloves, an air respirator, and other small items necessary for painting.

Or, you can spend about $250 on the gun and compressor, own it permanently and do lots of things with it for the rest of your life- like paint your house, air clean stuff, run other tools with it, etc.

If you have a special car or a collector car, plan on spending a lot of time sanding and re-sanding, and fine sanding, and polishing, and correcting your mistakes, and doing body work.

If you don’t have an extra $3000 sitting around, this may be your only choice- AND you can do it, and come up with an absolutely gorgeous job. I will show you how, and my methods come from THE BEST EXPERTS possible.

If you just have an old car and would rather do it yourself than spend $300 or $400 at the budget shops for a mediocre job that they will do, you can do it quickly and end up with a finish as good if not better than such shops, and spend a minimum amount of time doing it- although you will still need the materials and equipment you don’t already own, and a place to do it.

You can get the download or DVD (it is dirt cheap), or just read through the basics on this page and get a good idea of what you will need to do.

Okay….you decide. No bull here. The best painting adventure to you!
